Welcome

Welcome to the first edition of the 2003 newsletter for the Barossa International Festival of Music. The Festival newsletter is designed to provide you with news, program highlights and updates leading up to the Festival.

Director John Russell is continuing to build on last year's success with an outstanding program planned for the 2003 Festival.

This year there is a further commitment towards developing some of the outstanding young talent, homegrown in the Barossa, including pianist/composer Amanda Lee Falkenberg and actor Talhi Vogt. Acclaimed young South Australian artist Marnie Wark has contributed a painting to the Festival's poster and is also producing some work for the Festival's major dance production 'Edge of the World'.

The Festival will also feature artists from around Australia, Germany and Denmark. See Program Highlights below for more information.

Dates for your diary

The Festival will open on Friday 3rd October and run through until Monday 6th October with four days of outstanding performances.

2003 Program Highlights

With no theme apart from artistic quality, Director John Russell has pulled together diverse forces, from string ensembles to troupes of actors and dancers.

To be added will be jazz, cabaret and Academy concerts in a festival club setting.

Program highlights will be on sale from the end of June.

Edge of the World

One of the Festival's major events is a dance production titled 'Edge of the World', featuring the Leigh Warren and Dancers company and the Adelaide Art Orchestra.

Barossa composer Amanda Lee Falkenberg has written an exciting major new work in which she will also feature as the solo pianist. Primeval drama, pastoral lyricism and dramatic gesture are all part of Amanda's biggest work to date.

Choreography is by Peter Sheedy, and production designs by rising young Australian artist Marnie Wark.

Amadeus by Peter Shaffer

Chopt Logic (Shakespeare's way of saying, 'are you mad?') is a brilliant new troupe of actors brought together by young Barossa actor Tahli Vogt.

They will present Amadeus in a new creative partnership with the Festival. Peter Dunn will direct this production.

Tankstream Quartet

A sensational new Australian ensemble, this young string quartet is making its second visit to the Festival, and will be appearing with Danish guitar virtuoso Peter Howard Jensen with two outstanding programs.

Mozart Piano Quartet

Appearing at the Festival for the fourth time, this partnership of virtuoso players from Australia and Germany has established an outstanding international reputation, with tours on both sides of the Atlantic and Pacific.
